Eastern Hokkaido in early July
Eastern Hokkaido in early July is the month of summer and a beautiful season of colorful wild flowers. Killer whales (Orcas) gather in the Nemuro Strait, off the coast of Rausu town and brown bears in the Shiretoko Peninsula become more active.
At the beginning of the tour, we will visit Nemuro and Lake Furen area mainly for birding. A boat cruise from Ochiishi bay will provide you an opportunity to observe or photograph sea birds such as Tufted Puffins, Horned Puffins, Japanese Cormorants, Japanese Murres, Common Murres, Spectacled Guillemot, Rhinoceros Auklet, Pomarine Skua, Laysan Albatross, Black-footed Albatross and Black-tailed Gulls. You may also be able to see Sea Otters if we are lucky. During the morning walk around Lake Furen, you may encounter a pair of Red-crowned cranes living in the marshland from spring to autumn.
The next destination is Shiretoko National Park and we will stay for 3nights in Rausu, east side of national park. Here you can expect to photograph Killer whales (Orcas) and Brown bears from a cruise boat. Also we will visit Notsuke Peninsula in the late afternoon, where various kinds of wild flowers bloom during summer. You can expect here to photograph Ezo sika deer and red foxes in the beautiful scenery background of Shiretoko Mountain Ranges and Kunashiri Island. At night, you will have two opportunities to photograph Blakiston’s fish owl from observation hut. In years when breeding is successful, owl parents will frequently appear to bring food to their chicks.
Last part of the tour will be spent in the west side of Shiretoko national park mainly for landscape photography. Stanning view of Shiretoko pass, Shiretoko Goko lakes and Frepe water falls will be the highlights here.
Killer whales and Seabirds in Nemuro Strait
The Nemuro Strait, located between Rausu and Kunashiri Island, is well known as the place to observe killer whales. Multiple pods, approximately 200 killer whales, come every year from May to July and this area has the highest killer whale encounter chance in the waters around Japan today. The research also suggests that the Nemuro Strait may be a meeting place for the different groups so they can look for future partners. In 2023 and 2024 season, a pod of killer whales, including white individual, came to the Nemuro Strait and they were observed from cruise boats several times during the season. Although it is not easy to meet this unique white killer whale, let’s hope they will come again in 2025. May to early July is the best season to observe and photograph killer whales and you will have three boat cruise chances as it may be canceled due to bad sea conditions.
