Blakiston's Fish Owl Observatory Lodge in Rausu
Rausu on the Shiretoko Peninsula is a great place to spot the rare Blakiston's fish owls. They are the world's largest owls with a wingspan of reaching 180cm and are critically endangered species, only about 140 of them are left in Hokkaido.
We can arrange a stay at a traditional style Japanese inn which has its own bird watching hide and 6 rooms all looking out across a stream where Blakiston's fish owls feed almost nightly. The special lighting system in a natural stream allows visitors to photograph Blakiston's fish owls year-round.

Important Notes
- Maximum 2 can be accommodated in a room. Guests are asked to arrive in the lodge for check in before sun-set time because late arrival may interfere owls’ appearance. The rooms are typical old Japanese style with futon bedding, shared toilet and bathroom. Only Japanese food (mainly fish menu) is served and dietary restrictions cannot be requested.- Observation/photography is possible both from the room and bird watching hide. Overnight guests may be asked to observe from guest room when bird watching hide is full of other visitors.
- There is no public access to the lodge. We can arrange taxi service from Nakashibetsu airport (about 75min drive) or Memambetsu airport (about 150min drive) on your request.
