Highlights
Accompanying Guide: Yoshihiro Ito
Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1959. Underwater photographer and diving instructor. After experiencing scuba diving for the first time in Iriomote Island (Okinawa), he was captivated by the underwater world and became a professional diving instructor in 2009. While diving in the seas and rivers around the world, he was fascinated by the rich ecosystem of the rivers in Gifu. He was the first to offer guided tours in the area, establishing the "Ito Diving Project." He runs these river observation tours, while also pursuing his underwater photography of river creatures. He conducts a wide range of studies and observations on the Japanese Giant Salamander on the Wara River, including individual identification, ecological observations, and habitat parameters.
Snorkel with Japanese Giant Salamanders
Dive into the crystal-clear rivers of rural Gifu to search for the Japanese Giant Salamander, a national special natural monument and one of Japan’s most mysterious native species. Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll also encounter other fascinating creatures that inhabit these mountain streams.
The night tour which offers a different perspective on the natural beauty of Gifu
In June and July, see the magical dance of Genji fireflies over the Ondani River, a branch of the pristine Wara River. Later the same night, head into the forested hills to spot the twinkling Hime fireflies. This is a limited-time experience where two types of fireflies can be seen in a single evening.
In the other seasons—May, August, and September— the guide will take you to go in search of the Japanese flying squirrel, wild raccoon dogs and deer. In some cases, your guide may take you to visit a riverside area where Japanese Giant Salamanders live, and try to spot them from above the water.
Relax in a Local Inn and Enjoy Seasonal Cuisine
This private tour is limited to 4 guests, with departures available from just one person (solo travelers subject to an additional fee). You’ll stay in a cozy countryside inn nestled deep in the forest, and enjoy fresh, local meals featuring river fish like iwana (Japanese char) and other seasonal ingredients foraged from the surrounding area.
Join an experienced local guide for snorkeling in clear mountain streams, where giant salamanders live in surprisingly high numbers. With a bit of luck and a patient eye, you may encounter several individuals and have time to observe them up close in their natural habitat. You'll also explore the world of other stream-dwelling creatures, discovering a lesser-seen side of Japan’s freshwater ecosystems.
At night, depending on the season, the adventure continues:
June and July: Visit a secluded spot where both Genji fireflies and Hime fireflies illuminate the night in a mesmerizing natural display.
May, August and September: Go in search of the Japanese flying squirrel, wild raccoon dogs and deer.
With multiple opportunities for both snorkeling and night tours, this experience lets you dive deep into the natural rhythms of rural Japan—from sunny afternoons in cool streams to magical nights under the stars.

Important:
Even in summer, mountain rivers in this region remain very cold. Entering the water without a dry suit can cause your body to chill quickly, making it difficult to enjoy the experience. For your safety and comfort, we strongly recommend wearing a dry suit during all river activities. If you would like to rent equipment, please contact us in advance.
Please wear clothes that can get wet, such as T-shirts, shorts, tracksuits, and socks. We recommend rash guards or quick-drying fabrics. Bring a towel and extra clothes in case that you get wet.
For evening tour, please make sure to wear clothing with long sleeves and long pants. It helps you to protect yourself from insect and leech bites. If there is a chance of rain, bring your rain jacket and pants. Waterproof is recommended.
